Train is a convenient way to move in Kenya, most trains are modern with comfortable beds and good meals, furthermore, is the safest way to travel around the country, although slowest, long waits and delays are expected. You can book a ticket at Nairobi railway station or through local travel agencies.

There are three types of service:
  • The most expensive first class which is excellent, with wardrobe, bed, free water, a good service and more.
  • In second class, you have bed and meals, but the service is more basic.
  • Third class is basic and very cheap.
The state-owned Kenya Railways Corporation offer a train connection between Nairobi and Mombasa, trains generally leave in the evening and, after 13 or 14 hours, arrive the following morning. There are also passenger branch lines to Taveta, Kisumu, Nanyuki, Butere.

A journey in the "Lunatic Express", from Nairobi to Kampala (Uganda) is a memorable experience.
